This past Tuesday, August 26, my sister, Ruthie, who lives in Stuart suddenly felt her face go completely paralyzed and knew something was very wrong. She left work and went to urgent care to get a CT scan, and that’s when doctors told her they had found a tumor by her temporal lobe with possible lesions. Because there was no specialist available to help her locally, they arranged for her to be transported by ambulance from Stuart to Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, where she could get an MRI and be seen by doctors who could continue her care. Upon further testing, we learned, by the grace of God, that the tumor is benign. Still, due to swelling and infection, she needed immediate surgery. At first, we were told the doctors would not operate because she did not have insurance, but thankfully they ultimately decided to help her this time. After the surgery, however, she woke up to the devastating realization that she had lost her hearing. We also found out that the tumor was much larger than the doctors had anticipated. In fact, they believe it may have been something she was born with due to its size. Because of the risks involved, the surgeons could not continue during the first procedure, meaning she will need a second surgery, costing $250,000. Sadly, this time the doctors have been clear that they cannot move forward without insurance. Even if she applied now, her insurance would not be active until January, and her doctors have warned that she cannot wait more than 8 weeks or she risks losing her vision completely. This also made us realize that two years ago, when half her face became paralyzed, she was misdiagnosed with Bell’s palsy at an urgent care, without ever being offered an MRI. Now we know the tumor was the true cause. We are doing everything we can to seek financial help, but because she is not a resident of Miami-Dade or Broward County, many resources have been harder to access. We have even looked into possibilities of treatment in Peru, but her passport is expired, and we fear her head would not be able to withstand the pressure of flying. She normally works full time, with bills to pay, and now faces the reality that her health and future are at risk. Through it all, we thank the Lord for His faithfulness and that the tumor is not cancerous. But life continues to bring hardships, and financially this second surgery is a burden far too heavy to carry alone. Ruth, true to the meaning of her name, has always been a loyal and loving friend. She has brought joy and laughter to so many, and even now she is trying her best to remain her cheerful, bubbly self. We humbly ask that if you feel it in your heart to help towards her surgery in any way, our family will be grateful beyond words. We are still hoping to possibly secure funding through other sources, in which case, with an extremely grateful heart, 100% of the donations will be refunded. And just as important, we believe in the power of prayer. We ask that you keep Ruthie, her mom, and our family in your prayers, trusting with us that God is present and working in the midst of this situation. Salió del trabajo y fue a atención urgente para hacerse una tomografía, y fue entonces cuando los médicos le dijeron que habían encontrado un tumor en el lóbulo temporal con posibles lesiones. Debido a que no había un especialista disponible para ayudarla localmente, coordinaron su traslado en ambulancia desde Stuart hasta el Hospital Jackson Memorial en Miami, donde pudo hacerse una resonancia magnética y ser atendida por médicos que podían continuar con su cuidado. Tras más pruebas, supimos, por la gracia de Dios, que el tumor es benigno. Aun así, debido a la inflamación y a la infección, necesitaba una cirugía inmediata. Al principio nos dijeron que los médicos no operarían porque no tenía seguro, pero gracias a Dios finalmente decidieron ayudarla en esta ocasión. Sin embargo, después de la cirugía, ella despertó con la devastadora realidad de haber perdido la audición. También supimos que el tumor era mucho más grande de lo que los médicos habían anticipado. De hecho, creen que puede haber estado presente desde su nacimiento debido a su tamaño. Por los riesgos involucrados, los cirujanos no pudieron continuar durante el primer procedimiento, lo que significa que necesitará una segunda cirugía con un costo de $250,000. Lamentablemente, esta vez los médicos han sido claros en que no pueden proceder sin seguro. Incluso si solicitara uno ahora, la póliza no estaría activa hasta enero, y los médicos han advertido que no puede esperar más de 8 semanas, o corre el riesgo de perder la visión por completo. Esto también nos hizo darnos cuenta de que, hace dos años, cuando la mitad de su rostro se paralizó, fue mal diagnosticada con parálisis de Bell en una clínica de urgencias, sin que jamás le ofrecieran una resonancia magnética. Ahora sabemos que el tumor fue la verdadera causa. Estamos haciendo todo lo posible por conseguir ayuda financiera, pero como no es residente de los condados de Miami-Dade o Broward, muchos recursos han sido más difíciles de acceder. Incluso hemos considerado la posibilidad de tratamiento en Perú, pero su pasaporte está vencido y tememos que su cabeza no pueda resistir la presión de un vuelo. Ella normalmente trabaja a tiempo completo, con cuentas que pagar, y ahora enfrenta la realidad de que su salud y su futuro están en riesgo. A pesar de todo, damos gracias al Señor por Su fidelidad y porque el tumor no es canceroso. Pero la vida sigue trayendo pruebas, y financieramente esta segunda cirugía es una carga demasiado pesada para llevar sola. Ruth, fiel al significado de su nombre, siempre ha sido una amiga leal y amorosa. Ha traído alegría y risas a muchos, y aun ahora se esfuerza por seguir siendo su alegre y risueña versión de siempre. Humildemente pedimos que, si sienten en su corazón el deseo de contribuir de alguna manera a su cirugía, nuestra familia estará agradecida más allá de las palabras. Aún tenemos la esperanza de poder conseguir fondos por otras vías, y en ese caso, con un corazón sumamente agradecido, el 100% de las donaciones será reembolsado. Y, tan importante como eso, creemos en el poder de la oración.
